Proposal
Honors Capstone Course: Bachelor of Apparel and Textile Technology
TET/ATT 4480 – Senior Project
This course is designed to be the culmination of the undergraduate Apparel and Textile
Technology education. Under the guidance of the professor, students will form small
design teams, to develop a new product /plant, or redesign an ongoing project/product.
Working as independent teams with guidance from the lead professor the projects will be
completed and the results presented for review to a panel of faculty and students. All
projects must be approved by the course professor.
The primary objective is to develop a product line from concept to retail while using
learned skills from the program. The main topics of focus are:
• Market Research
- Why do we need this product
- Who is the customer
- Price Points
- Sales forecasting
• Product Development-Concepts to finish product based upon the market
information
- Color
- Styling
- Designing
- Sizing
- Operations list
- Garment analysis
This course addressed the Honors curriculum guidelines by requiring oral and written
communications, collaborative work, interdisciplinary components, and experiential
learning. Specific learning outcomes for each student enrolled are listed below. The
outcomes particularly applicable to the Honors guidelines are noted with a (*).
1. Prepare a scope of the services for a project.
2. Practice how to work together as a design team.
3. Prepare a technical written project design report (*).
4. Identify the data collection needs for a project.
5. Orally present and defend their findings to their peers and faculty (*).
6. Prepare meaningful progress reports.
7. Prepare a set of engineering plans (*).
8. Present and defend a proposal for a project.
9. Integrate knowledge from other classes (*).
10. Work independently (*).
11. Prepare a feasibility study.
12. Work effectively as a team member and team leader (*).
Honors student will be included on project teams with non-honors students. The team
will prepare a bound project design report and engineering plans. The Honors students
will be required to independently research one or two separate project issues such as:
• Long-term sustainability
• Marketing strategy.
• Environmental assessment
• Ethical issues
• Sourcing
• Merchandising
At the completion of the project the Honors students will participate in the team oral
presentations, submittal of a written project report, and engineering plans. In addition, the
Honors student will prepare a separate bound report and make an oral presentation on
their independent research.
